Helsinki Cathedral
Helsinki Cathedral is a Lutheran cathedral on Senate Square and one of Helsinki’s most recognisable landmarks.
About
Helsinki Cathedral is a Lutheran cathedral located in the centre of Helsinki on Senate Square. It was built between 1830 and 1852 in honour of Emperor Nicholas I, Grand Duke of Finland, and was originally known as St Nicholas’ Church.
The cathedral was designed in neoclassical style by Carl Ludvig Engel. Its high green dome, smaller surrounding domes and symmetrical Greek-cross plan make it one of Helsinki’s most recognisable landmarks. Later, Ernst Lohrmann added the statues of the twelve apostles on the roof.
